Tambuwal’s Aide Sent To Prison For Allegedly Sharing Gov’s SSCE Result
The Media aide of former Sokoto State governor, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has been sent to prison for daring to share media content considered offensive to the present governor of the State, Alhaji Ahmad Aliyu.
This was as the trial magistrate, Fatima Hassan, barred journalists from covering the proceedings of the Court on Monday, August 26, 2024.
At the end of the Court sitting, Shafiu Umar was sent to a correctional Centre for allegedly insulting Governor Ahmad Aliyu, his wife, and his deputy on a Facebook post.
Umar was accused of sharing a video of the governor struggling to construct a sentence in the English language and also posted the governor’s senior secondary school leaving certificate online.
The police’s First Information Report (FIR) obtained by reporters indicated that the State government charged Umar with circulating injurious falsehood and engraving matter known to be a defamatory offence which the government said contravened the Penal Code law.
The FIR also accused Umar of having committed an offence sometime in July 2024 by sharing videos of the wife of the governor, Fatima Aliyu, in which guests were spraying her money in dollars during her birthday celebration.
Umar was also accused by the state government of sharing a document showing that Governor Aliyu failed his Senior Secondary School Examination as the result indicated that he scored F9 in English thus, was not capable of speaking the English language fluently.
Briefing journalists at the end of the court sitting, Counsel to Umar, Mr Yusuf Abubakar Esq, said his client (Umar) denied the allegations, following which he (Abubakar) made an oral application for his bail.
While adjourning the ruling for the bail application to September 6, 2024, the Chief Magistrate ordered that Umar should be remanded in the Sokoto Correctional Centre.
