BY VICTOR BUORO, ABUJA – The Nigerian Defence Headquarters on Thursday declared that the military high command is yet to authorise any retirement of any of its senior officers.
The Defence Headquarters which stated this while reacting to speculations in the media that following the appointment of Major General Farouk Yahaya as Chief of Army Staff (COAS), there was mass retirement of some senior Generals in the Nigerian Army, stated that retirement of senior officers from the military was always voluntary.
The position of the Defence Headquarters was made known by the Acting Director, Defence Media Operations, Brigadier Gen. Bernard Onyeuko, while briefing the media, saying that the media speculations were false.
According to Onyeuko; “Retirement of senior officers from the military is always voluntary. At this point, you are all aware of the appointment of the new Chief of Army Staff, Major General Farouk Yahaya.
“This has stirred up lot of rumours in the media about mass retirements in the military. I wish to use this medium to dispel such unfounded rumours as retirement is only on voluntary basis for senior officers who desire to do so.
“At this point, no retirements has been authorized by the military high command,” he stressed.
