The United States government has warned Judicial officers who would trample on the fundamental rights of their countrymen that judicial robes would not protect them from sanction.
It specifically warned that corrupt judges in Nigeria and other countries around the world could face sanctions soon.
The warning followed the imposition of sanctions on a Brazilian Supreme Court judge, Alexandre de Moraes, whom the U.S. government accused of abusing his power and position.
Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, who announced this on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, said that Justice Moraes was sanctioned under the Global Magnitsky Act due to serious human rights violations.
“@POTUS and @USTreasury have sanctioned Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes under the Global Magnitsky sanctions program for serious human rights abuses,” Rubio wrote in a social media post.
While cautioning judges in other nations, particularly Nigeria, Rubio said; “Let this be a warning to those who would trample on the fundamental rights of their countrymen—judicial robes cannot protect you.”
The Global Magnitsky sanctions include financial and travel restrictions placed on individuals involved in severe human rights abuses.
The law is named after Sergei Magnitsky, a Russian lawyer who uncovered government corruption, but was imprisoned, tortured, and died in custody in 2009.
According to the U.S. State Department, the Brazilian judge was found guilty of actions that violated basic freedoms. The Department said; “Today, the United States is sanctioning Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes for serious human rights abuse, including arbitrary detention involving flagrant denials of fair trial guarantees and violations of the freedom of expression”.
The Department noted that Moraes misused his authority by going after political critics just as he reportedly ordered online platforms, including American social media companies, to block accounts of people expressing protected opinions.
The U.S. government also accused Moraes of using his position to approve unfair detentions before trial and of attacking freedom of speech.
The Department further said; “These actions led to his official designation under Executive Order 13818, which enforces the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act”.
The development indicates that the U.S. is now turning its searchlight on corrupt judicial officials in other nations, with a strong message that no one is above the law.
