Court Jails Man Six Months For Assaulting Jos DISCO Staff
For assaulting a staff of Jos Electricity Distribution Company (DISCO) Plc in the course of his official duty in Gombe State, 30-year-old Ibrahim Shayibo will be cooling his feet in jail for the next six months.
However, consequent upon his admission of guilt, Shayibo, convicted on each of the three count charges, was given an option of One Thousand Naira (N1000) fine by a Chief Magistrate Court presided over by His Worship, Babayo Usamatu.
He was also ordered to pay the company, Jos DISCO, and the victim the sum of N5000 as compensation for the money expended in their course of transportation.
The DISCO staff, Sani Maigari, currently with the electricity outfit at BCGA 11 KV Feeder, was assaulted by the convict for disconnecting his father’s house over non-payment of electricity bills. The matter was immediately reported at the State Low-Cost Police Station where the culprit was arrested and interrogated.
After the interrogation, Shuayibo, who lives at Nasarawo Quarters of Gombe, was arraigned before the Chief Magistrate Court VI with charges of Intentional Insult, Criminal Force, and Assault under the Penal Code.
According to a statement by the Head, Corporate Communications, Dr Friday Adakole Elijah, Shayibo pleaded guilty when the charges were openly read out to him in the court pursuant to sections 78, 399, 263, and 244 of the Penal Code and 156 – 257 of Criminal Procedures Code.
In sentencing the defendant, Magistrate Usamatu ruled that; “The accused is hereby found guilty on his plea of guilty and lack cause on why he should not be convicted by this court. The accused, Ibrahim Shayibo is accordingly convicted of the offenses of Intentional Insult and Criminal Assault under sections 399, 263 and 244 of the Penal Code “.
Applauding the judgment, Managing Director of Jos DISCO, Engr Hashim Ibrahim Bakori praised the court for delivering justice, adding that the company would no longer tolerate wilful attack or assault on any of its staff while performing their legitimate duties. – With Agency reports
