BY AUSTIN AJAYI, YOLA – Anxiety over the new wave of Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the country has seen Governor Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State putting the people on red alert with warnings by health authorities that its spread is faster than the earlier version.

In an obvious move to place the State on notice over a possible fresh round of restrictions, the governor said his administration is not leaving anything to chance at tackling the virus spike already reported in Nigeria.

He said; “With the confirmation that Nigeria has entered the second wave of the pandemic that changed developments across the world for much of 2020, government has resolved to ensure citizens observe the protocols of COVID-19 for their own good.”

Regretting that COVID-19 has taken a huge toll on the economy and social activities, the governor, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Humwashi Wunosiko, assured that government intends to “keep businesses open as nobody would want to go through another round of lockdown.”

Governor Fintiri, who urged residents of the state to ensure strict compliance with measures aimed at containing COVID-19 spread in the State, said; “The best thing for both Public health and the economy is for residents to respond to the new measures necessary to stem the tide of COVID-19.

“The time for swift and decisive action is now and we cannot afford to be slow.”

He said due to the rapid spread of COVID-19 virus new variant, residents must comply with using face mask; avoiding crowded places; frequent washing of hands and use of sanitizers; while also observing social distancing and traveling only when necessary.

Similarly, Governor Fintiri said government will need the cooperation and support of club owners, event centres and those operating businesses at night at this time to effectively tackle the second wave of the pandemic.

For him, it is important to ensure these businesses shut down by 10pm daily in the overall public interest even as the government works hard to contain the virus spread in Adamawa state.

“The new strain of Coronavirus, which is spreading faster, calls for the understanding and cooperation of all to stop the virus” the statement added.
