Bauchi Police Arrest 4 Herders For killing 2 Farmers, Injuring Others
BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, BAUCHI – The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested one Ruwa Umar, a 25 years old Fulani, for alleged attack and murder of two farmers.
Umar, alongside three others, are accused of killing both farmers at their farms in Tabak Village of Mainako Ward in Zaki Local Government Area of the State.
Confirming the arrest, the State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmed Wakili told Forefront that a report has been received from Zaki Police Division on the crime committed.
According to the PPRO; “Yes, the offence was committed on the 21st of December when the suspects invaded the farm killing two farmers in the process.
“Our personnel responded promptly and arrested some suspects who were from the neighbouring Jigawa state.”
He also disclosed that; “One Ruwa Umaru, 25 years old and others from Jigawa state were arrested in connection with the crime and have been charged to court.
“Investigations is ongoing to get more of the suspects who are believed to be Udawas.”
DSP Wakili assured that personnel from the State Command are presently in Jigawa state working with the Police Command to track down others involved in the crime.
The member representing Katagum Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Mukhtar A. Suleiman had, while drawing the attention of the House to the attack on irrigation farmers by the herders in the area, disclosed that two farmers were gruesomely murdered by the attackers.
According to the Lawmaker, who was speaking under matters of urgent public importance, the herdsmen stormed the villagers’ farms; attacked the farmers; and killed two of them.
He explained that his constituents relied heavily on farming for their livelihood and these attacks by herdsmen are creating fear and making their farms unsecured.
Mukhtar therefore urged the Assembly to charge the State government on taking measures at securing the area and bringing the criminals to book.
In his remarks, the House Speaker, Abubakar Suleiman said the incident is worrisome because it affects people and their sources of living, saying that this can happen anywhere.
According to him, action must be taken immediately to contain the situation and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Thereafter, the House unanimously adopted the prayers contained in the motion.
