  • Nigeria records 4 deaths, 147 new infections

BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI – A total of 516,898 new Coronavirus (COVID-19) infections were recorded worldwide on Tuesday, October 27, 2020, according to an AFP tally from health authorities across the globe.

Though this is a record figure, experts cautioned that most coronavirus cases were undiagnosed during the first wave.

This is as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), announced four COVID-19 related deaths and 147 new virus infections in the country on Wednesday, October 28, 2020.

The Johns Hopkins University tracker shows that the world has twice so far recorded a total of over 500,000 – and both in the last week. 23 October saw 506,713 new infections, while 26 October had a total of 525,164.

AFP reports that many epidemiologists have been warning for weeks that European governments have lost control of the latest outbreaks. This has made lockdowns almost inevitable as a last resort in what has become the global epicentre of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

New cases in Europe have been doubling every week or so, while track-and-trace and mass-testing systems that were promised after the first wave have been quickly overwhelmed.

Reflecting the bleak outlook, and with the seasonal winter flu season still ahead in the northern hemisphere, European and US stock markets tumbled as investors fretted over how the new measures will further hurt the economy.

In Nigeria, NCDC said the 147 new COVID-19 cases reported on October 28 came from 11 states and Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)

By the NCDC’s statistics disllayed on its verified website, the country has so far tested 617,750 persons since the outbreak of the pandemic.

It also disclosed that 179 COVID-19 patients were discharged from isolation centers across the country in the last 24 hours. These numbers include 116 community recoveries in Lagos State, managed in line with new case management guidelines.

Also, the Centre said Lagos confirmed the highest number of infections with 82 cases, with FCT reporting 20 cases; Rivers – nine (9) cases; Kaduna and Plateau states had eight (8) cases each.

“Till date, 62,371 cases have been confirmed, 58,095 cases have been discharged and 1,139 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and FCT,” the NCDC said in its reports
