The COVID-19 lockdown has left behind its telling effects on Epelemeje community in Akodo area of Lagos State, with reports of two (2) teenagers drowning at the local beach.

Both male teenagers: Dare – 16, and Fawas – 15, who reside in the community, are reported to have embarked on a swimming expedition aimed at whiling away time and shaking off boredom occasioned by the Federal and Lagos State governments sit-at-home order.

According to reports, some community members, who raised the alarm over the missing teenagers, expressed fears that the duo may have drowned in the beach as they have gone missing without any trace.

Already, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, has confirmed the report in a media statement issued by the Command on Sunday.

Elkana stated that some concerned members of the community had alerted the Police about the unfortunate incident on Saturday by putting a distress call to the Ibeju-Lekki Divisional Police Station.

The Police Spokesperson said the State Command responded by deploying its Marine Police Team to the area on a search and rescue operation.

Elkana, who disclosed that the Command is still awaiting field report from the operation team, however urged all “parents to monitor their children and ensure that they remain at home during this lockdown period” as a precaution against avoidable mishaps.
