COVID-19: NCDC Confirms 1,861 New Infections

BY VICOTR OSOWOCHI, ABUJA – The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Wednesday confirmed 1,861 new COVID-19 infections as the nationwide tally rose to 126,160 cases.

The disease outfit also put the fatality figure for the day at 22 deaths, taking the total number to 1544 deaths since the virus outbreak in Nigeria early March 2020

The NCDC also said; “Our discharges today (Wednesday, January 27, 2021) include 697 community recoveries in Lagos State, 128 in Rivers State and 116 in Plateau State managed in line with guidelines.”

Additional statistics on NCDC’s official Twitter handle indicated thus; “On the 27th of January 2021, 1861 new confirmed cases and 22 deaths were recorded in Nigeria.

“Till date, 126,160 cases have been confirmed, 100,365 cases have been discharged and 1,544 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory”

Offering a breakdown of 1861 new cases reported from 22 states of the federation, the NCDC presented the following; Lagos – (773), FCT – (285), Oyo – (138), Rivers – (111), Plateau – (92), Nasarawa – (83), and Kaduna – (59).

The states also listed among the double digits are: Enugu – (57), Imo – (57), Edo – (43), Kano – (27), Kwara – (20), Ebonyi – (19), Abia – (17), Ogun – (12) and Osun – (12)

Others that that fell into the single figure category include: Katsina – (8), Bayelsa – (6), Bauchi – (5), Delta – (5), Borno – (4), Jigawa – (4), and Zamfara – (1)

On its capacity building efforts for stakeholders, the NCDC twitted: “Last week, we commenced a series of training for healthcare workers on the use of #COVID19 Antigen Rapid Diagnostic test (Ag-RDTs) kits in FCT.”

The Centre further explained that; “The correct use of approved Ag-RDTs will increase the pace of testing, tracing and providing care for #COVID19 patients.”
