BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, BAUCHI – In spite of the fact that Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State recently signed into law the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act which tends to protect women against gender based violence especially rape, the menace has not in any way reduced in the state.

The latest case is that of a 45 years old man who allegedly raped a seven years old girl in Shira.

Speaking under matters of urgent public importance on the floor of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, a member representing Shira state constituency, Hon. Bello Muazu Shira informed the House about the terrible and devastating incident that happened in Faggo where a the 45 years old man raped a seven years old girl.

Similarly, Hon. Tukur Ibrahim representing Toro/Jama’a state constituency, said that comparable case also happened in Toro on Monday, adding that there was tension in the area and therefore urged the House to act on the cases and ensure that the right thing is done.

According to Muazu, the man threatened the girl with a knife and subsequently raped her adding that after he was arrested and handed over to security operatives, some influential people bailed him, saying that they will resolve the matter amicably.

The lawmaker however said that the moment the suspect was released, he disappeared into thin away and has not been seen since then.

He further explained that as a member representing the people of the area, it is his duty to stand for the people and therefore urged the House to ensure that justice was done for the girl so that the culprit will be rearrested and made to face the wrath of law.

The lawmaker expressed optimism that the House will stand for the poor little girl thus requested for a speedy action on the matter to fish out the culprit who was protected by some people before his escape.

Commenting on the matter, Speaker of the House, Hon. Abubakar Y Suleiman, wondered how cases of rape are increasing in the State even though the House has enacted the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) law to end such heinous acts.

Suleimen said that the House will make some amendments on the Law so that offenders will get capital punishment in order to deter others with such intention.

Also, Yusuf Inuwa Dadiye representing Ganjuwa West suggested that the Security and Judiciary committees should be assigned to go and find out more facts about the cases and make sure the culprits are arrested and handed over to the authorities.

In his own contribution, Hon. Baballe Abubakar Dambam said that since some influential politicians or government officials are behind the case, the House should find out who they are and ask the Government to take action about them.

The Speaker later referred the matter to the House committee on Women Affairs and directed it to report back within one week.
