BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, BAUCHI – A 25 years old man, who is presently on the run has allegedly raped a 7 year old girl (names withheld) who is currently laying critically ill and receiving treatment at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi.
Founder of a Bauchi based Non-Governmental Organisation NGO BabanTakko Foundation, Hajiya Zainab Baraya BabanTakko, who disclosed this to journalists on Thursday, said the incident took place on Tuesday in Anguwar Kur within Bauchi metropolis.
She said; “The suspect lured the innocent girl to an abandoned building in the area and raped her after which he dumped her near an abandoned clinic building in the area leaving her for dead”.
“Some good Samaritans who saw the little girl in the condition she was, took her home but could not be taken to the hospital because it was late coupled with the fact that the parents were in a state of confusion seeing their daughter in that situation”.
The rape victim was taken to the hospital the following morning (Wednesday) by the Foundation after it got the information.
The Foundation Chairperson said that the little girl is currently receiving treatment and responding well, adding that the unfortunate incident has been reported to the Police Command while the legal department of the Foundation is getting ready to initiate prosecution of the suspect anytime he is arrested.
Baban Takko called on Governor Bala Mohammed to immediately assent to the bill on violence against persons (VAPP) passed in to law by the State House of Assembly recently.
Mother of the victim while speaking with tears in her eyes, lamented the situation her daughter found herself in, saying that if she survives it, the memory will hunt her for life and she will continue to live in trauma.
She said that they thought the little girl was in the neighborhood at the time not knowing that she had fallen victim to what she described as “barbaric and inhuman” act and therefore called on the authorities to do something to curb the trend.
The visibly worried woman said; “She is the youngest among my children and very intelligent. Now, somebody has made her to live in trauma all her life. I have left judgment for Allah. If I had any sharp object with me at that time, I would have killed him”.
When contacted the Police Public Relations Officer for Bauchi command, DSP Ahmed Wakili said his office is yet to get the report from the concerned Division but promised to get back as soon as he gets briefed on the matter.
