Doyin Okupe Quits As Director General Of Peter Obi’s Campaign Council
Following his conviction over money laundering by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Monday, Dr. Dotin Okupe on Tuesday resigned his position as the Director General of the Peter Obi/Ahmed Dati Presidential Campaign Council of the Labour Party (LP).
This was contained in a letter he addressed to the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi in which he drew the attention of the LP flagbearer to his travail in trying to seek justice and clearing his name using the Nigerian Legal system to pursue same.
Okupe said that he has invested too much in Obi’s campaign to allow his personal travails to become a source of distraction.
In the words of Okupe; “In the circumstance, I have opted to step aside and plead that you appoint a new Campaign DG who can continue the assignment with zero distractions”.
Okupe was on Monday convicted of breaching the Money Laundering Act by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja and was accordingly sentenced to two years prison term.
The trial judge, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, however gave Okupe an option of N500, 000 fine on each of the 26 count charges which accrued to N13m for which he was able to meet up with the Court demand that the fine must be paid before 4:30pm on Monday.
