DSS Confirms Arrest Of Suspended CBN Governor, Emefiele

The Department of State Services (DSS), on Saturday confirmed the arrest of Mr Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

A terse statement by the Public Relations Officer of the DSS, Dr. Peter Afunanya, said that Emefiele is now in the custody of the secret police for some investigative reasons.

The DSS appealed to members of the public, particularly the Media, to apply utmost caution in the reportage and narratives concerning the development.

The arrest of Emefiele in Lagos and his being flown to Abuja took place barely 12hours President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved his suspension from office as Governor of the CBN.

Checks by Forefront News indicated that the DSS carried out a careful stealth operation that led to his arrest while attempting to flee the country through the land borders.

A source told our correspondent that as soon as the Service got hold of Emefiele who was dressed in caftan with a native cap to match, it quickly moved him to the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos into a waiting plane that flew him to Abuja.

According to the source; “Emefiele was fleeing through the land border when he was arrested last night”.

Forefront News had on Friday night reported the arrest of Emefiele but was unable to get official confirmation of the arrest by the DSS.

Emefiele, who was suspended on Friday by President Tinubu, was directed to handover the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), Folashodun Adebisi.

Adebisi will act as the apex Bank Governor of pending the conclusion of investigation and the reforms in the nation’s financial sector.
