The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has finally doused the controversy surrounding the name of Governor Godwin Obaseki by issuing a new discharged certificate to the embattled Edo state Chief executive.
Determined to clear any legal impediment that could truncate his second term bid, Governor Obaseki had approached the Scheme for remedy on the initial document where an error was noticed in the spelling of his surname name.
The Edo state Chief Executive participated in the National service in 1980, but an error was thereafter detected on the discharged certificate issued to him.
The alphabet i was conspicuously missing in his surname which read Obasek instead of Obaseki.
And citing this error, the All Progressives Congress (APC) panel that screened aspirants for the Edo 2020 gubernatorial primary election presented it as one of the reasons for disqualifying the Edo governor from the race.
Desperate to see through his ambition, Governor Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shaibu, subsequently dumped the APC for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) where he contested and won the primary poll unopposed with all others contenders having stepped down for him.
However, before the PDP primary held on June 25, Governor Obaseki had taken necessary steps to rectify his miss-spelt name by writing to the NYSC and requesting that the error be corrected and a new certificate issued to him
In a letter dated June 19, 2020, a copy cited by TheCable, one Okonofua K N, who signed for the NYSC Director General, said the Corps had undertaken a thorough investigation and found that there is a need for re-issuance of the certificate to reflect the governor’s correct name.
“I refer to your letter referenced EOG/ABI/99/VOL IV/172 dated 18th June, 2020, on the above subject matter please,” the letter read.
“I am directed to inform you that after investigation, the management of the National Youth Service Corps has approved that a new Certificate of National Service reflecting the Surname OBASEKI be produced as the earlier Certificate number 063107 dated 6th August, 1980 has been cancelled due to error in the surname i.e. OBASEK.
“Accept the assurances of the Director-General’s regard.”
For now, the coast seems clear for Governor Obaseki to face Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of APC and candidates of other political parties in the September 19, 2020 poll.
Four years ago, in 2016, Governor Obaseki, then a candidate of the ruling APC, defeated Ize-Iyamu, who ran on the PDP platform in a keenly contested election.
