For daring to attack their teachers and some police officers on duty, students of Idogbo Secondary School in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo state have been sent home indefinitely.

The Edo Government ordered the indefinite closure of the school through the Commissioner for Education, Mrs Joan Osa-Oviawe.

Reacting to the unfortunate development while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Mrs Osa-Oviawe said efforts were being made to prevent a reoccurrence, adding that one of the measures already taken is to compel parents of the students to pay damages for the assault and wanton destruction of public property

“We condemn, in the strongest term, what those students did. It is unacceptable. We have zero tolerance for the destruction of government property.

“The students and their parents are going to be held accountable for this. Somebody has to pay for the repairs and it will not just be government. So, the school will be shut down and we will regroup and reorganise,” she said

Reports said that on December 3, 2021, some students tried to chase away one of the policemen drafted to maintain law and order in the school, as they were about to take their first term examinations.

The reports also confirmed that Governor Godwin Obaseki, Secretary to the State Government, Commissioner for Education, and other government officials had visited the school to assess the damage.
