EFCC Frees Obi Cubana, Prepares For Court Trial
BY EDMOND ODOK – Popular Business mogul and socialite, Obinna Iyiegbu, also known as Obi Cabana, finally breathed an air of freedom from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)’s custody on Thursday after spending three nights with investigators over allegations of ‘currency abuse, money laundering, and tax fraud’.
The anti-graft agency spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, who confirmed the development, said the billionaire had been released from EFCC’s custody.
Declining any extensive comments on the matter, Uwujaren only responded; āIt is trueā in his reaction to enquiries on Cubana’s freedom.
EFCC insiders hinted that Cubana, whose release came after a team of lawyers perfected his bail conditions, may soon be dragged before the court for prosecution by the anti-corruption body over the allegations against him.
On arrival at the headquarters of the EFCC in the Jabi district of Abuja at about noon on Monday, November 1, 2021, the Commission reportedly seized his international passport to prevent him from leaving the country while under investigation.
Held and interrogated in custody by operatives since Monday afternoon when he honoured an invitation, the EFCC has not made public details of his alleged offences as at the time his administrative bail was perfected.
Though it is not yet confirmed if Cubana’s impounded passport has been returned after regaining freedom, speculations are rife his current travails may be connected to alleged ‘abuse of the Naira notes’ in the manner both local and hard currencies were ‘offensively’ on shower display during his mother’s burial in Oba, Anambra state.
