BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, BAUCHI –  A 23-year-old nursing mother, Comfort Peter, has accused a 33-year-old soldier, serving with a Military Regiment in Biu, Borno state, Sergeant Julius Simon, of taking advantage of her innocence and getting her pregnant.

According to Comfort, after Sergeant Julius allegedly slept with her with the resultant pregnancy, he has not only abandoned her but also made himself incommunicado for about one year now.

Amid sobs, the distraught Comfort, who narrated her sad story to journalists at the NUJ Press Centre in Bauchi, said; “We met in April 2018 when he was on a special assignment at the DIC plant in Bauchi where I was assisting a food vendor and he approached me that he was in love with me.

“I told my Madam about it but she warned me against it. Julius kept disturbing me and when I told my Madam, she said I should ask him to visit our house and see my parents if he actually loves me. I told him what my Madam said and he agreed to come to our house”.

With tears streaming down her cheek, Comfort continued; “He actually came to our house, met my father, and declared his intention to marry me. My father asked him several questions which he answered and my father reluctantly agreed, telling him to bring his people for the formal introduction.

“One evening in August 2018, he called to tell me that they will be leaving Bauchi back to Biu having completed the assignment. He then asked me to come over to Shadawanka Barracks to see him so that we will discuss it before he will leave the next day.

“I went to the Barracks as he requested. He took me to the house of one of his friends and slept with me all night. He was the person who actually disvirgined me. He was so excited that he met me as a virgin, promising that he will definitely marry me. I didn’t know that it was a fake love that he displayed.”

Comfort, who claimed that all efforts to reach Julius has proved abortive because he no longer uses the old phone number given to her, said; “When I earlier informed him that I was pregnant, he assured me of coming to see us but when I did not see him, I traveled to Biu to see him. He apologized for not coming as promised saying he was busy in the bush”.

“I also went back to Biu with my Uncle when the pregnancy was seven (7) months old, he also apologized to my Uncle and promised again to come with his family to formalize the marriage. We came back to Bauchi but he refused to come as promised. I delivered a baby in June 2019, and told him but has refused to come to see the boy who is now two (2) years and three (3) months.”

Refusing to be consoled in her pains, Comfort expressed regrets ever agreeing to make out Sergeant Julius’, adding; “How can you treat someone that you said you love like this? He cheated me and all I want is justice. Let him come and be a father to his son because the boy is two years now and already he has started asking for his father.

“Julius was the one that disvirgined me. He promised to marry me but deceived me. I will never love or trust any man again but he must take care of his son”.

Comfort, accompanied by her father, retired Assistant Superintendent of Police, pleaded with the Military authority to fish Julius out and make him responsible to his son, adding; “As for me, l no longer love him. I have forgiven him but would not marry him again.”

However, efforts to have a reaction from the Military authority in Bauchi on the matter proved abortive but an officer, who spoke with Forefront on condition of anonymity, advised that Comfort should formally lodge a complaint at the Unit where Sergeant Julius is currently on duty tour.
