EFCC Officers In Court For killing Colleague Over Suspects Exhibits
Two officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), have been charged with criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide before a Chief Magistrate Court, Gwiwa in Sokoto.
The two officers of the EFCC namely Apata Odunayo and Ogbuji Tochukwu, were alleged to have been involved in a scuttle that led to the death of a cadet, Abel Isah in the Sokoto Zonal Command of the commission.
The EFCC also announced the suspension of the two suspects and handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Spokesperson for the Commission, Wilson Uwujaren, who stated this on Tuesday at a press conference in Abuja, noted that the Late Isah was allegedly beaten to death by Odunayo and Tochukwu, who were his senior colleagues, over the deceased’s refusal to sign off on incomplete exhibits seized from a fraud suspect, that was handed over to him.
According to Uwujaren, the Late Isah died on May 7, 2023, at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, where he was receiving treatment for the injuries he sustained.
Uwujaren further said; “They had disagreed over procedures for the custody of items belonging to a suspect in detention, leading to a fight, a conduct which the commission frowns at.
“The latest information is that a two-count holding charge bordering on criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide has been filed against them at a Chief Magistrates’ Court, Gwiwa in Sokoto,” he said.
Uwujaren further said that the offences were punishable under Sections 60 and 191 of the Sokoto State Penal Code Law, 2019.
The EFCC spokesperson said that in addition to the police investigation, the suspects would also face disciplinary measures in line with the commission’s staff regulations, adding that the Chairman of the Commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa, has sent condolences to the bereaved family.
