EFCC Yet To Release Aisha Achimugu On Bail In Compliance With Court Order
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has failed to comply with a Court order directing it to release billionaire businesswoman, Aisaha Achimugu, who is still in the custody of the anti-graft agency six days after a Federal High Court directive.
Checks by Forefront News indicated that the EFCC has set some bail conditions that are difficult to meet by her sureties.
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja had on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, ordered the EFCC to release Aisha Achimugu within 24 hours.
The Court presided over by Justice Inyang Ekwo, in a short ruling, directed the parties in the suit especially the EFCC, to report to the court to give report on compliance to the order of the court on May 2, 2025.
However, the trial judge, Justice Inyang Ekwo was suspended the next day by the National Judicial Council (NJC) for one year without pay, a development that made it difficult for the EFCC to report back to the Court as directed.
Justice Ekwo had held; “The Third respondent is hereby ordered to foster the release of the applicant within 24hrs of this order. I also make an order that parties especially the third respondent (EFCC) responds back to this court in compliance of the order on 2nd May 2025”.
The matter was also adjourned to same day for hearing of the processes filed.
The EFCC had arrested Achimugu at about 5am last week Tuesday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport upon her arrival from the United Kingdom.
The EFCC said that it is investigating Achimugu over allegations of conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretence, money laundering, corruption, and possession of properties reasonably suspected to have been unlawfully obtained.
Sources close to the EFCC told Forefront News that Aisha Achimugu’s bail was delayed as a result of the inability of her sureties to meet up with stringent conditions that included having a landed property in Abuja.
It was also gathered that the EFCC on Monday verified the claims of two new sureties but insisting that Achimugu will remain in its custody pending when she is able to meet the bail conditions.
A dependable source at the EFCC said; “She produced new sureties on Friday. We will verify the claims of those standing for her on Monday. If the sureties do not fulfill the required conditions, she will remain with us”.
