Emefiele Staying Put – CBN Debunks Rumour Of Sack

With the insinuations refusing to go away, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says there is absolutely no truth in the online media reports purporting the sacking of the apex bank’s Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele.

Emefiele has been under public scrutiny since declaring interest by proxy to contest the presidency under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the 2023 general elections.

Several newspapers and online platforms have been quoting the Head of Corporate Communications at the CBN, Osita Nwanisiobi, as denying the trending report, saying, “I heard it just the way you got it too. As far as I am concerned, it’s a rumour.”

However, Nwanisiobi confirmed the rebuttal in a chat with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), saying that the CBN Governor is currently out of the country on official assignment and “I’m not aware of any sack.”

On May 9, 2022, reports broke out that Emefiele had approached a Federal High Court in Abuja seeking a constitutional interpretation of his non-resignation while pursuing his presidential interests.

Additionally, the Ward 6 Chairman in the Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, Mr Nduka Erikpume, had also confirmed that the CBN governor had registered as a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Responding to enquiries on Emefiele’s status in the ruling party, Erikpume said; “Yes, he has registered since February 2021. He is our member.”

Against the backdrop of these developments, condemnations and rumours of his being relieved of duties have not stopped trailing the apex Bank’s Chief’s involvement in partisan politics, with experts insisting that it could jeopardise the integrity of the country’s financial system. – NAN
