#EndBadGovernance Protest: IGP Puts Officers On Red Alert
- Confirms officer’s death, others injured
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has confirmed the death of a policeman on the first day of the current #EndBadGovernance nationwide protests on Thursday.
Also, IGP Egbetokun disclosed that several officers were injured by some hoodlums and miscreants who posed as protesters.
Briefing journalists on the protest in Abuja, the Police boss said it was unfortunate that despite warnings issued by the Force, development in some major cities across the country were characterised by “mass uprisings and looting, not protests.”
He also mentioned that some police stations across the country were set ablaze by rioters, noting that it was regrettable leaders of the protests were not present to lead the rallies.
According to him, despite the initial warnings from the police, the lack of leadership structure by the Protest organisers allowed hoodlums to take over the demonstrations and disrupt public peace in many locations.
The IGP further said; “Police stations have been destroyed. There have been attempts to take over government houses”, even as he condemned the looting of public and private warehouses and facilities.
Specifically, IGP Egbetokun pointed out that; “In places like FCT, Kaduna, Kano, and Gombe, among others, we recorded incidents of unprovoked attacks on our security personnel, where one policeman has been reported murdered and others seriously injured.
“In light of the current situation, the Nigeria Police Force has placed all units on red alert.”
He assured that “Our officers are fully mobilised and prepared to respond swiftly and decisively to public safety and order”.
