BY UBON EKANEM, CALABAR – The authorities of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) have made a passionate plea to the Federal Government for the establishment of a Naval base along the coastal border of the 50-year-old institution.

DIG Ekpo-Udom (rtd)

Pro-chancellor of the institution, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Udom Ekpoudom (rtd) canvassed the position at the University’s 37th Convocation ceremony and Golden Jubilee Anniversary celebration.

The occasion was marked by award of honours to deserving personalities as well as issuance of degrees to the University’s graduands.

DIG Ekpo-udom explained that the coastal border with the great Kwa River instead of being a blessing by boosting eco-marine research work in the University has instead provided hoodlums with easy access into the campus to perpetrate their criminal activities.

He said the establishment of a Naval Base appears to be the only permanent solution to the incessant security breaches often recorded within the university community.

Meanwhile, the Anniversary celebration witnessed the opening of a Hall of Fame where the names of the institutions illustrious alumni are engraved with honour, alongside the conferment of various academic honours on illustrious Nigerians.

The Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike went home with an honaris causa degree in law, wife of Senate President, Ekaette Unoma Akpabio bagged honoris causa in education management, while Supreme Court judge, Justice Agim was also honoured with an honoris causa degree in law.

Among prominent names engraved with honour in the Hall of Fame to mark the Golden Jubilee include the former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Dr Betta Edu, Deputy Speaker, Federal House of Representatives, Rt Hon Benjamin Kalu, and the Commissioner representing Cross River State in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr Orok Duke.
