  • Forward limps off one week ahead of tourney kickoff

France and Real Madrid striker, Karim Benzema limped out of Tuesday’s friendly against Bulgaria in a worrying sight for Les Bleus a week to the commencement of Euro 2021 tournament

Recalled to the national team after a six-year absence, the forward has been primed to play a starring role for his country at the competition after about six years on the sidelines.

He was originally exiled from the France squad following his role in the Mathieu Valbuena sex tape scandal.

On Tuesday night, he appeared to be injured after clashing with Bulgaria defender, Ivan Turitsov during the first half of their friendly match at Stade de France.

However, the 33-year-old participation in the continental tournament seems to be in doubt now following the knock.

What happened to Benzema?

The striker had attempted to continue playing following the clash, but went down in the 37th minute and signalled the bench to be substituted.

He appeared to be favouring his knee going down on the pitch in Paris. In his stead, Olivier Giroud was introduced 41st minute into the encounter.

What was said?

However, national team boss  Didier Deschamps told M6 at half-time that; “It’s a knock. He took a good hit on the muscle above the knee, and he felt that it was hardening so we took no risk. The medical staff is currently with him.”

Benzema’s return to France

Though it appeared his international career was over following the Mathieu Valbuena sex tape scandal, Benzema continued to be prolific at club level, scoring 23 La Liga goals for Madrid in the recently concluded 2020-21 season.

His impressive form convinced Deschamps to offer him a return to the Les Bleus setup as he was named to France’s Euro 2020 team.

The striker made his first appearance for France in almost six years last week, as he saw a penalty saved against Wales.
