The embattled former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele regained freedom the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) on Thursday night.
The DSS had announced that Emefiele was in its custody a day after he was suspended from office by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
But, the former governor of the CBN was yet to breath the air of freedom when the personnel of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), immediately effected his arrest and has been undergoing interrogation since his arrest last night.
The DSS which detained Emefiele since June this year, was yet to issue any statement regarding why it released Emefiele among other details regarding the investigations carried out on him.
Information pieced together indicated that the embattled former CBN Governor may be facing fresh charges after the EFCC investigations of his activities while he was at the helm of affairs of the apex bank.
Emefiele was arraigned befeore a Federal High Court, Lagos on July 25, 2023 on a two-count charge bordering on illegal possession of firearms.
The court granted him bail in the sum of N20 million but was not released by the DSS, and in a dramatic turn of event, the two-count charge was struck out on August 17, 2023 following the withdrawal of the charges by Federal Government.
However, the Federal Government through the Department of State Services instituted a fresh 20-count charge against Emefiele bordering on alleged conspiracy to carry out procurement fraud among others.
The arraignment was however, stalled twice upon the plea bargain that Emefiele proposed which included that he will relinquish his position as Governor of the CBN as well as part with some assests.
On September 22, President Tinubu while appointing the new Governor of the CBN, Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, announced the resignation of Emefiele.
