Family Denies Veteran Actress, Rachel Oniga Died Of COVID-19

The Family of Rachel Oniga has debunked reports that the veteran Nollywood Actress died from COVID-19 complications.

A statement issued to clear the air on her death, the family said contrary to earlier reports, their mother and daughter died of heart related disease.

The statement signed by the deceased’s sister, Deaconess Toyin Odusote, said Oniga, who took her last breath on Friday night, July 29, 2021, at aged 64, had been battling the ailment for some time now.

The son, Olatunji, who confirmed the legendary actress’ death on Saturday, said his mum departed to the great beyond on Friday night around 10pm.

According to him; “She passed last night around 10pm. She had malaria and typhoid.”

During her lifetime, the 64-year-old Oniga, who had a stint working for a European engineering consultancy firm with its regional head office in Nigeria, featured in numerous Nollywood movies, both English and Yoruba,

Until her demise, Oniga, whose acting career span over 27 years, was a multiple award-winning actress that featured in movies such as The Wedding Party; The Royal Hibiscus Hotel; 30 Days in Atlanta; Sango; and Out of Bounds, among others.

Born on May 23, 1957; the veteran actress began her career in 1993. Her first movie was the blockbuster, Onome, while her debut movie in the Yoruba speaking sector of the film industry was Owo Blow.

In one of her recent interviews, Oniga revealed that she had to stop working after marriage and started having children immediately.

However, with the union short-lived, she returned to the movie industry again after separating from the father of her children.

In the said interview, Oniga admitted that looking back, she regretted not fighting to keep her marriage.
