FG Committed To Providing Standard Road Maintenance In The Country – Minister
The federal government has said that it would remain committed to providing Nigerians the best in road maintenance and safety on all trunk ‘A’ roads network across the country.
Minister of State for Works, who is superintending FERMA, Mr Bello Muhammad Goronyo, Esq., who stated the position of the government on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, during a familiarization tour to the headquarters of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), in Abuja, said Nigerians deserve the best experience in pleasurable ride and security from all forms of danger when using the road.
Goronyo however, bemoaned the poor budgetary allocation for roads maintenance in the country as factor militating against the realization of this dream.
He said that President Bola Tinubu has given priority attention to infrastructure especially roads, adding however, that poor budgetary provision occasioned by competing needs from all sectors and the state of the economy has made things difficult.
Goronyo, who was in company of the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr Adebiyi Olusesan Olufunso, also visited the proposed Corporate Headquarters of FERMA situated on the Abuja Airport Road.
A statement by Mrs Maryam M. Sanusi, Director of Information and Public Relations of FERMA, quoted the minister as having said that he was comfortable with the performance of the Agency and is ready to give all necessary support to ensure the presidential mandate is achieved in the road sector.
Speaking in turn, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Works, Mr Adebiyi Olusesan Olufunso, said that it was as a result of inadequate funds and lack of timely releases that is being witnessed that have created some setbacks in the road sector.
Olufunso noted that FERMA staff are highly committed to duties adding that the Agency possesses some of the best staff in the Civil Service.
Responding, the Managing Director of FERMA, Mr. Emeka Agbasi, appreciated the Minister of State for his support and commitment towards ensuring that the Federal roads network is motorable all year round.
