The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of late former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in London at the age of 83.
This was contained in a statement by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Interior, saying that the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Minister of Interior said the public holiday is a mark of respect for former President Buhari’s decades of service to Nigeria.

Tunji-Ojo said that Buhari’s legacy in democratic governance and national development remains a reference point in the country’s political history.
In the words of Tunji-Bello; “President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. “This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” he said.
The Minister encouraged Nigerians to honour the late president’s memory by embracing peace, patriotism, and unity — principles Buhari consistently advocated throughout his time in public service.
The Federal Government’s announcement comes in continuation of the national mourning declared by President Tinubu, who had earlier directed that all national flags should fly at half-mast for seven days.
The Federal Government expressed its condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, and prayed for the peaceful repose of the late former President’s soul.
