Amnesty International Nigeria on Tuesday, August 25, 2926, declared that the chairman Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo is a danger to society.
The human rights organization insisted that Shekwolo must be held to account for threatening violence on those who may not vote for All Progressives Congress (APC).
It therefore condemned in very strong terms, Shekwolo’s threat to chase out from his Area Council anybody who refuses to join or vote for the APC.
Shekwolo, in what appeared a direct threat to lives while addressing stakeholders in Kuje, authoritatively declared that those who will not join or vote APC must leave Kuje Area Council or be ready to face the consequence that may befall them.
But, in a quick response to the alleged threat by the Kuje Area Council chairman, Amnesty International, stressed that such a threat was a direct attack on freedom of association and liberty of persons.
It emphasisied that no one has the right to make living in a place in Nigeria tied to voting for one political party.
Amnesty International said the police and other security agencies must halt the plan to use violence on people for their political choices.
Amnesty International said; “The chairman Kuje Area Council FCT Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo is a danger to society and must be held to account for threatening violence on those who may not vote for APC.
“Government has obligation to ensure that, before and after all elections, human rights are respected, protected and fulfilled, as guaranteed under international human rights law and standards and the country’s own Constitution,” it stated.
