The Federal Government has filed criminal charges against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over statements she allegedly made on national television alluding to a plot to assassinate her.

The suit marked CR/297/25 which was filed before a Federal Capital Territory High Court on May 16, 2025, has Akpoti-Uduaghan as the sole defendant while some persons namely; the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, former governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, and Sandra Duru among others were listed as witnesses in the case.

According to the charges, Akpoti-Uduaghan allegedly made accusations that could harm the reputation of individuals, an offense punishable under Section 392 of the Penal Code Law.

The charges said that the statements in question were made during an interview where Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan specifically accused Senator Akpabio and Yahaya Bello of plotting to have her assassinated.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who earlier raised alarms about threats to her life linked to influential figures in Nigeria’s political class, claimed that Senator Akpabio and Yahaya Bello were behind the alleged plot.

She had said that Akpabio directed Bello to commence her recall and fund it, and also to kill her in a way that would make it look like the people of Kogi State were responsible.

The case created controversy with Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations of sexual harassment against Akpabio and followed with her suspension from the Senate for “misconduct” which is yet to be resolved.

The present suit against the Senator representing Kogi Central senatorial district is bound to add to the political drama that has gotten Nigerians engrossed.
