FG Re-opens Schools October 12
States, private schs get conditions
BY TEMI OHAKWE, ABUJA – The Federal Government has approved nationwide reopening of schools at all levels for academic activities from Monday, October 12, 2020.
Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, said the decision was reached after due consultations with critical stakeholders and the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19.
Following the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak in Nigeria, the Federal Government had moved to check its spread by ordering closure of schools nationwide in March 2020
Announcing the decision at a news conference in Abuja on Friday, Adamu said with the level of preparations put in place to test and flatten the infection curve, government has now reviewed its earlier decision and approved the reopening of schools at all levels.
Specifically, he said; “after due consultation with the Presidential Committee on COVID-19, we have decided that at our 104 Unity Colleges should reopen on the 12th of October 12th, 2020”
The Minister however explained that State and Private School owners will work out the modalities for re-opening schools under their purview.
He charged School owners to ensure social distancing procedures, develop and display at schools and conduct risk assessment with a view to understanding the gaps in the system.
According to Mallam Adamu, there must be “Safety and hygiene in all stages and phases of the school reopening process which promote behaviours that reduced spread.”
Similarly, he said the respective schools must “‘Establish a staff/students Committee for regular surveillance ,monitoring and enforcement of COVID-19 guideline”
