FIFA U-20 World Cup: Nigeria Stun Argentina 2-0, Bags Quarter-Final Ticket
BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI – Against all expectations, the Flying Eagles of Nigeria stunned host nation, Argentina 2-0 on Wednesday night to win their Round of 16 encounter and bag a quarter-final berth at the ongoing FIFA Under-20 World Cup tournament.
Ibrahim Muhammad scored the first goal for Ladan Bosso’s boys in the 61st minute and deep into stoppage time, Rilwanu Sarki headed into the net, to further silence the home crowd and seal the huge win for Nigeria.
The Nigerian Under-20 national side will now play the winner of the last 16-round match between the Korean Republic and Ecuador on Sunday, May 4 for a place in the semi-final of the youth championship.
On record, the victory over Argentina is the first time ever that Nigeria have overcome a South American opposition at the Under-20 World Cup since their debut at the 1983 tournament hosted by Mexico.
Also, in other round of 16 games played on Wednesday night, Brazil overwhelmed another African Representatives, Tunisia 4-1 while Italy were stretched edging past England by two goals to one.
