Finally, Gov Obaseki Meets President Buhari, Presents Nomination Form
- Says my good works speak clearly, will earn me 2nd term
- I’ve APC Govs’ backing
BY VICTOR BUORO, ABUJA – At last, embattled Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State on Monday made moves to break what political pundits described as ‘barriers and hurdles’ on the path of his second term ambition by meeting and presenting to President Muhammadu Buhari his expression of interest form pursuant for re-election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The visit is coming ahead of the Governorship primary election of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) scheduled to take place this later month.
Governor Obasaki, who later briefed State House correspondents on his visit, said he feels that the President as a father needs to know of his ambition for a second term.
In his words; “Even though President Buhari is a father, it will be wrong to assume or take things for granted. So, I have to formally inform him.”
Commenting on the war against COVID-19 pandemic, Governor Obaseki said that so far, over 300,000 of the people of Edo state have been screened for the disease out of the 500,000 targets set by the government.
The governor also vowed that the killers of the 100-level student of the University of Benin, Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa would be tracked and brought to justice, stressing that perpetrators of such heinous crime must never go unpunished.
On his second term ambition, Governor Obaseki said he enjoys the full backing of all APC-elected Governors, explaining that it is a principle of the party’s governors’ forum to rally round an incumbent who desires a second term shot at the top office, especially when such an individual has a good scorecard of achievements to flaunt.
According to Obaseki, his administration’s good works in various sectors of the state will speak clearly and loudly for him in the coming election, stressing that the people are desirous that he sees off most of the programmes and policies initiated for their benefit in the last three years.
He said having been on the governance seat for more than three years now, the Edo people can confirm his commitment to serving them selflessly and creditably.
“The consensus is that we have done well as a government and that people would like us to continue with the laudable programs and policies which we have been taking over in the last three years”, he said.
The governor stated that the days of Edo State being notorious for human trafficking, with over 30,000 of its citizens in Libya waiting to cross into Europe, were gone, maintaining that today the State is being “celebrated globally, across the continent in terms of the reforms we’ve undertaken in basic education in this country.”
He said having gone this far, the State government cannot abandon the project, “those children, I can’t abandon them. We can’t stop what we have achieved to date.
“So based on that, we believe that because of a connection which we have created with our people, we have no doubt in our minds that we’ll win any elections, direct/indirect, general elections in Edo state.”
