Finally, Mbappe’s Dream Comes Alive As Real Madrid Claim UEFA Super Cup
- Beat Europa League winners, Atalanta 2-0
BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI – The intimidating new-look Real Madrid’s attack has secured the first silverware of the season in the UEFA Super Cup as former Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) main man, Kylian Mbappe enjoyed a dream start for his new club.
Starring in his maiden game for Los Blancos, Mbappe made the occasion memorable debut by scoring against Europa League winners, Atalanta with Jude Bellingham providing the assist in a comfortable 2-0 victory in Warsaw, Poland on Wednesday night.
As expected, every eye was on the newest arrival as he stepped onto the pitch for the first time as a Madrid player. Some can freeze under the spotlight but the World Cup winner followed in the footsteps of Galactico icons such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale by scoring on his debut.
The 25-year-old Frenchman linked up superbly with England star Bellingham to net his first goal in white after making a darting run into the Atalanta box. Being picked out by his Los Blancos team-mate, Mbappe made no mistake in finding the net, firing past Juan Musso in goal and into the top corner before soaking up the celebrations.
For sure, the Mbappe era is here, and many opponents of Madrid, home and abroad should be very afraid. In getting off to a perfect start in white, Madrid’s new signing was not the only shining star on the night as Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Jr, and Rodrygo hummed along before coming alive in the second half, carrying the Spanish giants to what was eventually an impressive win.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side had struggled to create for most of the first half, with the Mbappe, Vinicius, and Rodrygo triumvirate failing to gel. However, the latter came closest shortly before half-time, smashing an effort off the bar.
It was Keeper Thibaut Courtois who kept Real in the game after the break with a diving stop. Then Vinicius blew the game open just before the hour mark, dancing down the wing before cutting the ball back to Federico Valverde, who finished into an empty net. Mbappe added a second nine minutes later, smashing Bellingham’s feed into the top corner.
And that was all Los Blancos needed. Vinicius and Mbappe continued to ask questions, but a third goal never came. Still, the La Liga Champions were entirely in control, and from all indications, they will only get better.
After helping Manager Ancelotti’s side to a dominant triumph, Mbappe will now have a few days of rest before making his La Liga bow as the champions go up against Mallorca away on Sunday evening as they begin their title defence.
