BY COBHAM NSA, ABUJA – After spending about ten months on the saddle in acting capacity, President Muhammadu Buhari has finally approved the appointment of Mr Sunday Thomas as the substantive Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive Officer of National Insurance Commission (NAICOM).

With over three decades of experience in the industry as an operator and regulator, Mr Thomas took over from immediate past Commissioner for Insurance and CEO, Mallam Mohammed Kari, in acting capacity since July 2019.

Expectations started running high with mounting pressure from lobbyists when the Presidency kept mum on his status after the initial six months of acting.

Amid the silence, the waves of insinuations and conjectures about the likely non confirmation of his appointment took the centre stage of discourse among stakeholders and friends of the insurance sector.

But the Presidential endorsement has now laid to rest controversies over the status of Thomas who was appointed NAICOM’s Deputy Commissioner in charge of technical matters in April 2017.

A statement by Yunusa Tanko Abdullahi, Special Adviser, Media and Communications to the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, said Thomas was also a one time Director General of Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) in 2010.

The Minister’s aide further said the President has also approved the appointments of two board members for Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC).

The duo are: Mrs Ya’ana Talib Yaro Non Executive Director, representing the North East region, and Mrs Diana O. Okonta, Non Executive Director, who fills the slot for the South South geo-political zone

According to the statement, all the appointments take immediate effect
