The Anambra State Fire Service (ASFS) early on Friday morning battled hard to save a two-storey building gutted by fire along Ifejika Street, by Sokoto Road in Onitsha.
According to the ASFS officials, the fire, which started at one of the buildings around 6:20 am, unfortunately escalated into a nearby building.
It took the timely intervention of the Fire Service officials and some passersby at the scene to bring the situation under control.
Though the cause of the fire has not been ascertained as at the time of filing this report, it was gathered that some residents and men of the fire service on ground at the scene made frantic efforts to salvage some goods and property from the affected building.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Friday, Head of the Media and Publicity Unit, Anambra State Fire Service, Chukwudi Chiketa, urged residents and members of the public to remain calm as the firefighters were on top of the situation in their battle to put out the fire.
The statement by Chiketa said; “Anambra State Fire Service is currently on intervention at the scene of the fire outbreak at Ifejika Street, by Sokoto Road, Onitsha.
“The distress call came at 0620am today, and our firefighters deployed immediately.
“The public is advised to remain calm as the situation is under control”.
