Former EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Lamorde, Dies @ 61 In Egypt
A former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Lamorde, has died at the age of 61.
Reports said the retired Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) of Police died in Egypt where he was receiving medical treatment.
According to the reports, Lamorde had been battling an undisclosed illness before his passage to the great beyond.
An insider in the anti-graft Commission hinted on Sunday that the remains of the retired police officer would be buried according to Islamic rite.
Forefront News recalls that Lamorde, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) served as the third Executive Chairman of the EFCC between 2011 and 2015.
He was first appointed in November 2011 as acting Chairman after the substantive Chairman and his predecessor, Mrs Farida Waziri, was sacked from office by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The anti-graft agency was established in 2003 with the current National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, as the pioneer Chairman. Lamorde was made Director of Operations after Tiyamiyu Oluwagbemiga retired as the pioneer Director of Operations and Strategy in 2006.
Following Ribadu’s removal from office by President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in December 2007, ACP Lamorde took over as Acting Chairman in January 2008, and held the position until Farida Waziri was appointed and confirmed by the Senate in June 2008 as the Chairperson.
Fast forward, he was posted to Ningi in Bauchi State but returned to the EFCC again in December 2010 as Director of Operations to replace Stephen Otitoju, the then acting Director of Operations.
On 25th February 2012, the Senate confirmed Lamorde as the substantive Chairman of the anti-corruption agency. However, his duty tour at the Commission effectively ended on 9th November 2015, when former President Muhammadu Buhari sacked him and brought in Ibrahim Magu as the new EFCC Chairman.
Born on 20 December 1962 in Mubi, Adamawa State, Lamorde attended Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology in 1984.
Lamorde joined the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) in 1986. He was a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) and the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR).
