…Tinubu orders VP Shettima to UK to accompany body home
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday, July 13, announced the death of his predecessor in office, former President Muhammadu Buhari.
A statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, said that Buhari died today in London at about 4.30 pm, following a prolonged illness.
Accordingly, President Tinubu has ordered flags at half-mast as a mark of respect for the departed leader.
The statement said that President Tinubu has spoken with Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the widow of the former President and offered his deep condolences.
Onanuga also said that President Tinubu has also ordered Vice President Kashim Shettima to proceed to the United Kingdom to accompany the body of the late former President Buhari back to Nigeria.
The late former President Buhari was twice elected Nigeria’s President in 2015 and 2023 and also served as military head of state between January 1984 and August 1985.
The death of former President Buhari was earlier announced in a terse statement by his spokesperson until his death, Mallam Garba Shehu.
Shehu in the statement on Sunday afternoon, said that based on available information, Buhari died in a hospital in the United Kingdom on Sunday.
