Hours after the Zamfara State House of Assembly removed Deputy Governor Mahadi Aliyu Gusau from office, Governor Bello Matawalle has appointed Senator Hassan Gusau as his replacement.

Until his new appointment, Hassan was the Senator representing Zamfara Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly.

Following the impeachment of Gusau by the State lawmakers at their resumed plenary on Wednesday, spokesperson for the Assembly, Mustafa Kaura, explained that the former Deputy Governor was found guilty of all the allegations levelled against him.

According to Kaura; “The House found him guilty of the offences levelled against him which were submitted earlier today in the House and subsequently read at the floor of the chamber by the Speaker of the House, Nasiru Mu’azu Magarya.

“Magarya told the plenary that the committee set up to investigate the former Deputy Governor found him guilty of all the charges levelled against him and directed his colleagues to proceed with individual voting of affirmation for the Deputy Governor to be impeached as required by the law.”

The statement by Kaura further said; “20 out of 22 members voted in favour of the impeachment while the only PDP member of the House, Hon. Salihu Usman Zurmi, was conspicuously absent during today’s plenary.

“Having secured the required number of the votes as directed by the constitution, Speaker Magarya announced the impeachment of Barr Mahdi Aliyu Muhammad Gusau as the substantive Deputy Governor of the state.”

On the reasons behind Mahadi Aliyu’s removal from office, the statement said he was indicted by the Justice Haladu Tanko panel which investigated the gross misconduct and abuse of office allegations levelled against him.

The new Deputy Governor, Hassan Muhammad Gusau, or Hassan Nasiha, was born on December 12, 1960. Elected Senator representing Zamfara Central district in the Upper Legislative Chamber in 2019, he is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Senator Gusau dumped the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to APC after Governor Matawalle took the lead in June 2021.
