BY UBON EKANEM, CALABAR – The Governor of Cross River State, Prince Bassey Otu, has approved the cancellation of the 2025 Agbokim Waterfalls Green Marathon over security concerns

The Secretary to the Government of Cross River State (SSG), Professor Anthony Owan Enoh, said the decision followed what the governor described as “the ‘prevailing national security realities’ requiring cautious action and responsible planning.’

In a statement made available to journalists on Thursday in Calabar, the State capital, Prof Enoh said the governor considered it necessary to cancel this year’s edition to ensure the event is properly planned and fortified for the future.

The SSG stated that; “His Excellency believes the marathon deserves comprehensive, multidimensional support, and that requires adequate preparation.”

Enoh said the government was committed to enhancing the event’s long-term value, noting that security considerations must always take precedence over other issues

Furthermore, he quoted Governor Otu saying: “The safety of participants, organisers and spectators remains paramount”.

While expressing Governor Otu’s regret over the inconvenience the cancellation may cause athletes, partners and organisers who had already invested time and resources in planning for the event, the SSG said, “We deeply appreciate their enthusiasm and understanding at this time.”

However, he assured that the marathon would come out of this temporary challenge stronger and more prestigious, stressing that, “Subsequent editions will carry the unmistakable signature of Cross River excellence.”

According to him, the State government is focused on elevating the Agbokim Waterfalls Green Marathon to “an event of national pride and global attention” once all necessary structures have been put in place.

The event tagged: “Ikom Ajasor Agbokim 42 km Race 2025” was slated to hold on Saturday, 22nd November with lots of star and consolation prizes at stake for the winners.
