Gov Oyetola Knocks Off Aregbesola’s Edu Policy
BY SEGUN ADEBAYO – Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun State has again upturned another education policy of his predecessor, Rauf Aregbesola, as part of efforts to reposition the sector for effective service delivery.
In what some political watchers claim is another no love lost move, Oyetola ordered the reversal of Osun State Teachers’ Establishment and Pension Office (TEPO) to its original name, Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM).
Coordinating Director in the Osun State Ministry of Education, Kehinde Olaniyan, who announced the government’s decision, said the development takes immediate effect.
According to a statement signed by Olaniyan, the change became imperative in line with the government’s policy and institutional reforms in the State education sector.
The statement said; “In continuation of the Policy and Institutional Reform on-going in the Education sector of the State, His Excellency Mr Gboyega Oyetola, the Governor of the state of Osun has approved that the Teachers Establishment and Pensions Office (TEPO) reverts to its constitutional and Original Name of Teaching ServiceCommission (TESCOM) and the reversion takes immediate effect”.
Since taking over power as the State Chief Executive, Governor Oyetola has upturned some of the educational policies of the previous administration, citing the need for effective management and service delivery as reasons for its actions.
Among the policies reversed are the single school uniform; school names; and the return to the 6-3-3-4 system from Aregbesola’s policy of 4-5-3-4.
During his time in office as governor, Ogbeni Aregbesola created the TEPOto replace the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), which was charged with overseeing the recruitment, welfare, and pension administration of teachers in the state.
He also established a TEPO office in each of the three senatorial districts headed by Tutor Generals/Permanent Secretaries as part of his administration’s decentralization policy in the education sector.
