- Praises PDP’s spirit of sportsmanship
BY UBON EKANEM, CALABAR – The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River State Council, has joined the growing list of groups and individuals to applaud the Supreme Court over its resounding affirmation of Prince Bassey Edet Otu as the duly elected Governor of the State.
In a congratulatory message signed by the State Chairman, Comrade Nsa Gill, the Council said as critical stakeholders in the nation’s electoral process, the NUJ does not have any reservations in congratulating the apex Court Justices for affirming the people’s mandate as freely expressed during the March 11, 2023 governorship election in the state.

The Council further said having deployed its members to monitor the electoral process in the state before, during, and after the elections, the NUJ was convinced that the election outcome truly reflected the people’s mandate given on the day.
The Union also noted that so far, Governor Otu’s people-oriented development programmes are resonating across the length and breadth of the State as within a short period of only seven months development projects are evenly spread and distributed across the three senatorial districts of Cross River State.
According to the Council, the beauty of democracy is that the electorates are already testifying of the positive impact that Governor Otu’s ‘People First Agenda’ mantra is having on their lives.
Equally, the NUJ praised the main opposition party in the State, the People Democratic Party (PDP) for demonstrating the true spirit of sportsmanship by not only congratulating the Governor over the Apex Court’s affirmation of his victory at the polls but also pledging to remain as a strategic development partner with the present administration
However, the Union, while urging Governor Otu to work hard on fulfilling his electoral promises to the people, also reminded him of the important role the media is constitutionally mandated to play in a democratic dispensation and the need to assist practitioners perform their roles in relations to the socio-economic development and growth of Cross River State.
