Tragedy struck late Sunday night as armed assailants invaded Kawel village in the Mushere District of Bokkos Local Government Area in Plateau State, leaving at least 18 farmers dead and several others injured

Bokkos Youth Leader, Christopher Luka, who confirmed the fresh attack on Monday, said the unfortunate incident occurred around 11:30 p.m on Sunday.

Available information indicated that the attack came less than five days after the District Head of Gwande in the same Bokkos Local government Saf Samuel Alaket, was killed in an ambush along the Sha District axis bordering Daffo community.

It was reliably gathered that the late traditional ruler was returning home after a traditional council meeting when he ran into the ambush.

However, while narrating Sunday night attack on Kawel community, Luka disclosed that his colleague and a member of the youth council reported the incident as it happened, saying: “A youth leader called around 12 a.m. that gunmen attacked the community and shot over 20 people, so 18 were confirmed dead.”

On his response after receiving the information, Luka stated that the matter was reported to security personnel stationed in Bokkos, saying: “I called the security and they confirmed to me that they had been alerted and were on their way to the attacked community.”

Further condemning the attack as entirely unprovoked, the youth leader demanded immediate, decisive intervention from security forces to halt the violence before it spirals into full-scale chaos

Meanwhile, neither the State police nor Operation Enduring Peace has commented on the situation. Their respective spokespersons, Superintendent of Police (SP), Alabo Alfred and Captain Polycarp Auta, were yet to responded to inquiries from reporters as of press time.
