Hoodlums Attack Gov Oyetola’s Wife Convoy, Injure Aides

• Five suspects are now in Police net

BY SEGUN ADEBAYO – Suspected political thugs on Friday night attacked the convoy of Osun State Governor’s wife, Kafayat Oyetola, injuring some of the aides in the process.

The unfortunate incident occurred around 8:10 pm at the market area of Owode-Ede in Ede South Local Government Area of the State.

Reports said the hoodlums engaged the security aides attached to the convoy in a shootout that sent residents of the area running for cover.

An eyewitness account said; “The convoy was passing through the market when a truck suddenly blocked its lane and the thugs, who are already around the area, started hauling stones at the convoy.

“They attacked the convoy with dangerous weapons and the operatives started shooting into the air. Some of the security operatives may have sustained injuries because one of them was heard calling out to his colleagues that we have been hit.”

“The glasses of some vehicles in the convoy were shattered. In the ensuing panic and confusion, many people around the area were seen scampering to safety in order to avoid possible stray bullets from the exchange of fire”, one of the sources further said.

The Media aide to the Governor’s wife, Iluyomade Oluwatumise, who confirmed the incident, however, refused to disclose the number of security aides that sustained injuries in the encounter.

According to her; “All I can tell you is that no life was lost in the incident. I can’t tell you the numbers of security operatives that were injured but some of them that were attached to the convoy sustained various degrees of injuries”.

Police Nab Five Suspects

Meanwhile, the Osun State Police Command on Saturday confirmed that five suspects have been arrested by police operatives in connection with Friday’s attack at Owode in Ede.

In a statement by Osun Police Spokesperson, Superintendent of Police (SP) Yemisi Opalola, disclosed that one security personnel on the convoy was injured during the incident.

SP Opalola said; “On Friday, at about 8:30 pm, the police received credible information that at Owode, Ede Market Expressway, some hoodlums were attacking the convoy of the wife of Osun Governor.

“The Divisional Police Officer ‘A’ Division, Ede, promptly mobilised and led detectives to the scene where the team met CSP Dauda Ismail, the Chief Security Officer to Gov. Gboyega Oyetola of Osun.

“CSP Ismail briefed the team that one Omolola Opeyemi, a driver from Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, drove an unregistered truck and blocked the movement of Mrs Oyetola.

“As a result of the traffic blockage, some hoodlums took advantage and started stoning the convoy of the governor’s wife, thereby, injuring the truck driver on his forehead and also injuring a DSS personnel.”

The Police Spokesperson further said; “However, five suspects were arrested from the scene and investigation is in progress”, adding that; “Further development will be communicated later”. – With NAN reports
