The newly confirmed Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, on Wednesday promised to work assiduously for the independence of the judiciary, just as he vowed to work against corruption in the country.
According to Onnoghen, who appeared before the Senate for confirmation screening, “I assure you that I will not compromise my integrity, and the independence of the judiciary will be re-enforced under my watch. I believe that you don’t need to see a judge before you have justice.”
Speaking on cases of conflicting judgements, the CJN said, “The system has its own regulatory mechanism through the means of appeal; that is how we resolve conflicting judgements. But, to think that we can do away with conflicting judgements is not possible.”
