…We are carrying on with proceedings unhindered, Says Akpabio

The usually calm political atmosphere at the National Assembly took a different turn on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, following speculations of a possible impeachment of the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.

It was also gathered that the impeachment move against Senator Akpabio, was predicated on what majority of the Senators, particularly those from the Northern and Eastern region are believed to have become a major source of concern over his style of leadership of the Upper chamber of the National Assembly as well as his chairmanship of the federal legislature.

It was gathered that the aggrieved Senators are not happy with Senator Akpabio as President of the Senate for not showing concern over the hardship being experienced by Nigerians and his unguarded utterances and jabs thrown at poor Nigerians, thereby giving the Senate a bad reputation before the right thinking members of the public.

Meanwhile, Senator Akpabio at Senate plenary on Wednesday, declared that the reports of an impending impeachment against him were completely false and mere misinformation, saying that legislative activities were proceeding normally.

The Senate President therefore referred what he considered as unfounded rumours to the Senate Committee on Special Duties for investigation.

This is not the first time that Akpabio is addressing circulating rumors of impeachment as he equally raised the same matter at a recent plenary.

In the words of Akpabio; “We are here sitting down and doing our work very peacefully, unaware of the mischief unfolding behind the scenes. This fake news is hereby referred to the Committee on Special Duties”.

Akpabio noted that such false narratives have become prevalent, adding that they are often propagated by individuals aiming to generate traffic for financial gain, saying; “Those spreading this misinformation might be profiting from it due to the high engagement. The issue of impeachment does not arise”.

He therefore directed the Committee to investigate the matter thoroughly and provide a report promptly.

In his response, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties, Senator Shehu Kaka (APC, Borno Central), assured of his commitment, saying; “As the Senate President pleases; I will do the needful and report back, sir”.
