BY TEMI OHAKWE, ABUJA – The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Arch. Bishop Ignatius Kaigama, has said that insecurity remains a threat to the survival of the Nigerian education sector, especially private universities.
Kaigama, who said on Saturday at the 10th convocation ceremony of Veritas University in Bwari, Abuja, said that the attacks by bandits and other criminal elements on the education sector do not only affect the safety of students and staff in schools but also directly or indirectly affect the survival of private universities.
He therefore called on the government to take drastic measures to improve security in university campuses to secure the lives of students.
Kaigama said; “I therefore, wish to use this medium to call on the government to take drastic steps to improve on the security and safety of lives and properties in and around university campuses across Nigeria”.
In his speech, the Vice Chancellor, Fr. Prof Hycinth Ichoku said the University graduated 331 students from its previous academic session, out of which 30 made First Class Honours.
Ichoku further sad that the Students, including 60 post-graduates, completed their studies and certified by the school for the ceremony.
According to him; “The number of graduating students from both undergraduate and post-graduate classes are about 331 of which 60 of the number are from the postgraduate class.
“Out of all these numbers, we have 30 students graduating with First Class Honours, 151 in Second Class Upper, 130 in Second Class Lower and 50 made Third class.”
He said that the school worked very hard to make sure that its students put in their best academically, intellectually and morally.
The Vice Chancellor noted that the school made significant progress in the past year, adding that it has not relent in its effort to meet the needs of prospective students.
The Guest Speaker at the Convocation, Kola Adeshina tasked the graduates on mind shift to the use of technology to enhance their future.
