BY CHANBERLAIN ODEY, JOS – The Plateau State Government on Wednesday imposed another 24-hour curfew on Jos North Local Government Area following the tension and sensibilities sparked by Tuesday’s night’s attack and killing of some 35 natives in Yelwa Zangam village of the State.

This was as emotions heightened as the bereaved community protested with the corpses to the State House of Assembly and later to the Government House in Rayfield to demonstrate and express their feeling of government negligence and nonchalance in spite of the early warning conveyed by the destruction of the bridge linking the only road to the village by the assailants on the night before the attack.

The announcement of the renewed curfew came after a stir and frenzy resulting from shouts and chase of a petty thief at the Terminus business area led to a general scare and massive closure of shops and offices around the popular Ahmadu Bello Way and its environs as people scampered and rushed back to their homes for safety.

In a statement by the Director of Press Affairs to the Governor, Makut Simon Macham, the curfew as approved by Governor Lalong will commence from 4pm on Wednesday, August 25, 2021 until further notice.

The statement further stated; “The proactive decision became necessary following imminent threat to lives and property within the Local Government Area and the need to forestall a breakdown of law and order.

”It will also enable security agencies deploy appropriately to maintain security as the search for the attackers of the villagers continues.

“The 6:00pm to 6:00am curfew in Jos South and Bassa LGAs still remains in place till further notice”, and reiterated that persons on essential duties such as health personnel, journalists, fire service workers, and para-military are exempted from the curfew”.

Tuesday’s attack and killings in Yelwa Zangam recorded the highest casualty of the several attacks and killings in disparate Plateau villages after the July 31 to August 2 attack, killings, and burning and looting of homes of the Rigwe People in Bassa Local Government Area of the state in which the death toll stood at over 70.
