BY VICTOR BUORO – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chieftain and a senatorial Candidate for Nasarawa South in the 2027 general elections, Dr. Mike Omeri Agbo has challenged Nigerians to defend their votes and resist all forms of electoral fraud.

He said it is citizens’ duty to uphold the principles of justice, fairness, accountability and respect for the people’s mandate as the country marks the 2026 Democracy Day anniversary.

Speaking in a Democracy Day message on Friday, Omeri, who is a former Director-General of National Orientation Agency (NOA), described June 12 as a significant date in Nigeria’s democratic history.

According to him, it symbolises the sacrifices made by democratic heroes who fought for electoral integrity, constitutional governance and the rule of law.

He said: “June 12 is a significant date in Nigeria’s democratic history”, noting that it symbolizes the sacrifices made by democratic heroes who fought for electoral integrity, constitutional governance and the rule of law.

“Democracy Day serves as a reminder of the courage displayed by Nigerians following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely acclaimed as one of the freest and fairest elections in the country’s history.”

According to him, as stakeholders in the country, all Nigerians must put in more efforts in strengthening democratic institutions, promoting national unity and advancing socio-economic development.

He described Nigerians’ contributions to governance, peace and development in the country and Nasarawa state as unwavering, and solicited the continuous prayers, support for overall interest and growth of the country and in particular Nasarawa state.

The former NOA boss acknowledged the contributions and sacrifices made by the PDP leadership at various levels, including the National Leaders, National Chairman, National Working Committee (NWC), Zonal, State, Local Government and Ward executives, as well as the party supporters nationwide.

While appreciating ongoing efforts in ensuring a peaceful, fair and credible 2027 polls, Omeri said PDP remains a credible, dependable platform committed to providing good governance and people-oriented leadership.

The PDP chieftain and philanthropist further said, “As we celebrate democracy, we must renew our commitment to its true spirit. Democracy cannot thrive where electoral manipulation, voter intimidation and result falsification are tolerated. Every vote must count, and the will of the people must prevail.”

The Senatorial Candidate tasked his supporters and Nigerians to remain law-abiding and vigilant in safeguarding the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.

On his contributions to society, Omeri pointed to facilitating several employment opportunities and supporting numerous humanitarian initiatives in healthcare, education, agriculture, infrastructure development and financial assistance for vulnerable persons within Nasarawa State and beyond.

Also reaffirming his commitment to the State’s socio-economic transformation, prioritizing job creation, agricultural modernization, and robust support for businesses, Omeri said: “The overall interest of my people and Nasarawa remains my focus on promoting economic growth, strengthening small and medium-scale enterprises, expanding access to farmers and traders, and advancing reforms capable of improving the living conditions of ordinary citizens.”

Ahead of the 2027 polls, Omeri urged political officeholders and other stakeholders to embrace issue-based campaigns and democratic tolerance, warning against political violence, divisive rhetoric, and actions that undermine democratic integrity.

He said politics should be service-driven with innovative solutions rather than personal gains, urging Nigerians to prioritize competence, character, integrity and performance when choosing leaders, regardless of political affiliation, ethnicity or other considerations.

Demanding a stronger national future through citizen action and accountability, the Senatorial candidate rallied Nigerians for a peaceful Democracy Day while pledging to directly fuel Nasarawa State’s growth with aggressive, development-driven policies.
