Ahead of the forthcoming Ramadan, Muslim faithfuls in Kano State are upbeat in their preparations following the Government’s decision to adjust the 2021/2022 school calendar for both public and private primary and secondary schools across the state.
There is excitement in the air for parents and other stakeholders with the government acquiescence to their appeals for an extended holiday to accommodate the Ramadan.
The Deputy Director of Information, Kano State Ministry of Education, Aliyu Yusuf, who confirmed the development, said the government considered pleas for children and wards to be at home during the summer vacation and actively participate in the fast given its significance.
This year’s Ramadan fast will begin in the evening of Friday, 1 April and ends in the evening of Saturday, 30 April 2022. With this development, it means the second term period in the State will now be shortened by one week from the previously planned 13 weeks.
Similarly, the vacation is being extended by one week from the initial four weeks approved by the government.
A statement by the Education Ministry said; “By this adjustment, therefore, all public and private primary and post-primary schools operating in the state are to be closed for five weeks’ vacation with effect from Friday, April 1, 2022, to Sunday, May 8, 2022.”
The statement further quoted the state Commissioner of Education, Sanusi Kiru, as urging parents and guardians to be cautious during the upcoming summer vacation.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar and the month of fasting which begins and ends with the appearance of the crescent moon.
As a holy month of fasting, introspection and prayer for Muslims, the followers of Islam, Ramadan is celebrated as the month during which Muhammad received the initial revelations of the Quran, the holy book for Muslims.
