…As Deputy Governor denies sponsoring patients for eye surgery
Over 500 persons in Gwarzo Local Government Area (LGA) of Kano State have so far received free mobile eye screenings as part of the partnership between the Kano State Primary Healthcare and Management Board and the Makkah Specialist Eye Hospital.
This was contained in a statement by the press secretary to the Deputy Governor of Kano state, Ibrahim Garba Shuaibu, saying that the mobile eye screening initiative aimed to identify and address eye-related health conditions among the residents of Gwarzo Local Government Area.
Speaking on the success of the programme, Kamilu Saleh Dokadawa, Coordinator for Primary Eye Care in Kano State, said that 536 patients underwent screenings during the campaign.
According to Dokadawa; “Among them, 162 patients were identified with cataracts and were referred for surgical intervention. Additionally, 69 individuals were screened for glaucoma, and those requiring further treatment were also referred accordingly.
“To further support the initiative, the Makkah Specialist Eye Hospital generously donated 130 eye drops and 70 pairs of glasses as a complementary gesture to the people of Gwarzo LGA,” he said.
Expressing gratitude, two of the beneficiaries of the screening, Aminu Adnan and Ruqayyah Salihu, both residents of Gwarzo, commended the Kano State Government under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and his deputy, Comr. Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, for their timely intervention and commitment to the welfare of the people and the community.
Meanwhile, the office of the Deputy Governor of Kano State, has said denied report that it promised to sponsor 52 indigent patients for eye surgery.
A statement by the Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Ibrahim Garba Shuaibu while reacting to a report published by Solacebase Newspaper which alleged that the Deputy Governor, Comr. Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, failed to honor his promise of sponsoring 52 indigent patients for eye surgery, said that the story was misleading and unfounded.
Shuaibu categorically said that the Deputy Governor never made such a promise, adding that the claim by the reporter that he obtained his source of information from a tweet on September 9, 2023, on an unverified X handle formerly Twitter of the Deputy Governor was a tissue of lies and imagination.
Shuaibu said that the investigation lacked basis as there was no official statement indicating that the Deputy Governor sponsored any indigent patients for eye surgery.
According to him; “The only press release from his office was on July 10, 2023, stating that “Over 500 Benefit from KNSG Free Mobile Eye Screening in Gwarzo LGA”.
